What does it mean?
Goodyear Welted
A Goodyear Welted construction improves the strength and durability of a shoe. The welt is a strip of leather that is stitched to the bottom edge of the shoe, uniting the upper, linings and welt onto the bonded sole.
The stitching follows the outside of the sole rather than piercing under the foot, as such this maximises water-resistance and reduces the chance of leaking. In most instances cork is used between the insole and the outsole giving insulation, extra cushioning and ventilation.
Charles Goodyear Jr. patented the Goodyear Welt sewing machine in 1871, in Northampton, the epicentre of the footwear industry. Considered the hallmark of well-made shoes, the Goodyear Welt is synonymous with high-quality, longevity and Great British craftsmanship.
